How to Pray the Rosary: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

If you have ever held a rosary and wondered, “How do I pray the Rosary?”, you are not alone. The Rosary may look complicated at first, but once you understand the prayers, beads, and Mysteries, it becomes a beautiful and simple way to spend time in prayer.

The Rosary is a Catholic prayer centered on meditation on the life of Jesus Christ through the Mysteries associated with His life and Mary. The beads help us keep track of the prayers while allowing our hearts and minds to focus on each Mystery.

What Do You Need to Pray the Rosary?

To pray the Rosary, you need a set of Rosary beads and a quiet place where you can pray. However, the physical beads are not required. You can pray the Rosary using your fingers or simply follow the prayers from memory or a prayer guide.

A traditional five-decade Rosary contains groups of ten small beads, called decades. Each decade consists of one Our Father, ten Hail Marys, and a Glory Be.

How to Pray the Rosary Step by Step

1. Make the Sign of the Cross

Begin by making the Sign of the Cross.

2. Pray the Apostles' Creed

Holding the crucifix, pray the Apostles' Creed.

“I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried;
he descended into hell;
on the third day he rose again from the dead;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty;
from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Amen."

3. Pray the Our Father

Move to the first large bead and pray the Our Father.

“Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Amen.”

4. Pray Three Hail Marys

On the next three small beads, pray one Hail Mary on each bead.

These prayers are traditionally associated with growing in faith, hope, and charity.

"Hail, Mary, full of grace,
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou amongst women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
pray for us sinners,
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen."

5. Pray the Glory Be

“Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit,
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
a world without end.

Amen.”

6. Announce the First Mystery

Before beginning the first decade, announce the Mystery you will meditate on.

The four sets of Mysteries are:

  • Joyful Mysteries

  • Sorrowful Mysteries

  • Glorious Mysteries

  • Luminous Mysteries

The Luminous Mysteries were introduced by Saint John Paul II in 2002.

7. Pray the Five Decades

For each decade:

  1. Announce the Mystery.

  2. Pray one Our Father.

  3. Pray ten Hail Marys.

  4. Pray the Glory Be.

  5. Take a moment to meditate on the Mystery.

The purpose of the repetition is not simply to repeat words. The prayers create a rhythm that can help us become more attentive to the Mystery we are contemplating.

8. Finish With the Closing Prayers

After the five decades, you can pray the Hail Holy Queen and other traditional closing prayers, then conclude with the Sign of the Cross.

What Are the Mysteries of the Rosary?

The Mysteries are events from the lives of Jesus and Mary that we meditate upon while praying.

Joyful Mysteries:
The Annunciation, Visitation, Nativity, Presentation, and Finding of Jesus in the Temple.

Sorrowful Mysteries:
The Agony in the Garden, Scourging at the Pillar, Crowning with Thorns, Carrying of the Cross, and Crucifixion.

Glorious Mysteries:
The Resurrection, Ascension, Descent of the Holy Spirit, Assumption of Mary, and Coronation of Mary.

Luminous Mysteries:
The Baptism of Jesus, Wedding at Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom, Transfiguration, and Institution of the Eucharist.

How Often Should You Pray the Rosary?

There is no requirement that you must pray the Rosary at a particular time of day. Some people pray in the morning, others before bed, while driving, during a walk, or with their family.

If you are new to the Rosary, start slowly. You can even begin by learning one decade at a time.

The important thing is not to rush. Give yourself time to pray, reflect, and be present.
